What is PESA?
Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) is a minimally invasive sperm retrieval procedure. It involves inserting a fine needle through the skin into the epididymis to aspirate sperm-containing fluid. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and does not require surgical incisions.
Purpose and Process
PESA is commonly used to obtain sperm for IVF or ICSI in cases of obstructive azoospermia, where sperm production is present but sperm cannot reach the semen due to a blockage.
- Preparation: The patient is evaluated, and the procedure area is prepared under local anesthesia.
- Needle Aspiration: A fine needle is gently inserted into the epididymis to collect sperm-containing fluid.
- Laboratory Analysis: The collected sample is immediately examined in the laboratory to identify and prepare viable sperm for IVF or ICSI.
Ideal Candidates & Advantages
PESA may be recommended for men with obstructive azoospermia or for those in whom vasectomy reversal is not suitable or not preferred. The main advantages of PESA are that it is minimally invasive, quick, low risk, and usually allows fast recovery.
